Update on 7/15/26 — An arrest has been made in the case.
Arlington County police are on scene of an armed carjacking in a residential portion of the Cherrydale neighborhood.
It happened around 1 p.m. near the intersection of 18th Street N. and N. Randolph Street. Police say a man approached a woman who was inside an SUV, brandished a gun, and stole the vehicle and some personal items.
No injuries were reported.
“[The] suspect is described as a Hispanic male approximately 30 years old, wearing a black and grey shirt,” ACPD said on social media. “Expect continued police presence in the area.”
Initial reports suggest the man was wearing a reflective vest and armed with a rifle.
A witness told ARLnow that the woman who was carjacked was a dog walker who just finished returning a dog to a house on the street. Her wallet was also stolen but she was able to call police from a nearby home, we’re told.
A black pickup truck with Maryland tags could be seen parked in the middle of the street near the crime scene. The witness said the suspect jumped out of the truck before the carjacking.
As of publication time police, including detectives, are on scene investigating and combing the area.
The last publicly reported, completed carjacking in Arlington was last September, though there have also been attempted carjackings in the meantime. That marks a significant decline since 2023, when ACPD reported 25 total carjackings.
