A portion of GW Parkway is temporarily closing to northbound traffic, requiring detours starting next week.
Between Spout Run Parkway and Route 123, the northbound lanes will be closed for part of the day from Aug. 10 to Sept. 1. The closures are effective Mondays through Thursdays from 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.
“The closures will allow crews to safely inspect, prune and remove trees as part of ongoing maintenance efforts on the recently rehabilitated George Washington Memorial Parkway’s north section,” the National Park Service said in a press release.
Drivers traveling north will be redirected via detour signs between Spout Run Parkway and Route 123.
The tree work follows up on a $161 million overhaul of the road that concluded around the end of 2025.
The project was originally slated to clear about three acres of trees, seeking to restore “scenic vistas” at 15 locations between North Donaldson Overlook and Spout Run Parkway. That work came to a halt in Oct. 2024, however, following outcry from local advocacy groups.
